      1) Configure mod_security in a conf file

      LoadModule security_module modules/mod_security2.so
...

      2) Start httpd
      3) See log for errors

      Mod_security module has wrong dependency on libaprutil. Log output after failed httpd start - httpd.log:

      httpd: Syntax error on line 843 of /opt/ews/workspace/jbcs-httpd24-2.4/httpd/conf/httpd.conf: Syntax error on line 1 of /opt/ews/workspace/jbcs-httpd24-2.4/httpd/conf.d/mod_security_smoke.conf: Cannot load modules/mod_security2.so into server: libaprutil-jws3-1.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

      Dependecy has to be on libaprutil-1.so.0 and not on libaprutil-jws3-1.so.0.
