Feature Overview
Currently insights image builder builds new images, but this takes some time and users may not need all the customization it adds, or want to go through a big wizard process. Being able to download an image that was built that day with registration credentials baked in would be a much better user experience.
Background and Strategic Fit
This will help with the "Get the bits" initiative by providing images with registration built in. Ideally this replaces the download experience for Red hat today.
Goals
- provide a better out of the box experience, allowing users to have a registered system automatically (and thus making updates available)
- Give users fresh images
- Increase the number of systems registered to insights
Requirements
requirement | Notes | Is Mvp? |
Fresh images built every day for RHEL 8, 9, & 10, net install and installable DVDs | Y
Given an image already exists, being able to add an activation key and registration command to run at boot up within 10 seconds | Y
Provide an interface for users to download these fresh images | Y
Only users with a Red Hat Subscription would be able to download the image | Y |
Non-Functional Requirements
Use Cases (User Experience & Workflow)
User navigates, or arrives at insights images builder.
They either have been directed straight to a Download modal, or click 'Download' (or something similar to open the modal.
The user is given the option to download various RHEL 8, 9 and 10 images, including offline install and net install images
The user would download the image and launch it.
Upon launch the image would be registered to their account.
Customer Considerations
Users will not want their downloads to take a long time to 'prepare', so this should be 10 seconds or less
