Progress bar doesn't display properly on 80 char consoles

If you have a console less than 100 or so characters, the new 7.1 startup progress bar displays a newline for each increment...

80 character consoles are very common (default on Ubuntu, Windows too IIRC) so we should fix this prior to release.
