Common error when PG connector cannot connect is confusing

For many errors that happen when the connector starts up and tries to connect to PG the error that is shown is:

Could not initialize type registry

This can happen for something as simple as the user name or password for the DB being wrong. A more accurate error message would be helpful or at least a message that does not point to the type registry being the problem.
