We would like to migrate VMs from one storage provider to another without interrupting applications or services running on these VMs. In VMware, this feature is known as storage vMotion.

The KubeSAN project is developing a CSI driver that will allow attaching SAN storage to OpenShift. In VMware, customers are used to attach multiple SAN solutions to VMware and move running VMs between these SANs. Three example scenarios that demand storage vMotion:

      1. I would like to move critical VMs to a high-performance SAN that I just bought.
      2. I would like to move VMs between different storage tiers. Each SAN comes with different capabilities and performance. I would like to move my VMs between storage tiers to optimize the storage usage,
      3. When decommissioning a SAN, I would like to move VMs off the SAN.
