As a VM owner, I want to understand that when using ceph-rbd (or another similarly configured storage class) to clone a VM from one of the OpenShift Virtualization included os images, a shared snapshot clone will be utilized automatically which improves cloning efficiency and scalability.
As a OCP admin I want to understand how to configure a storage class to prefer cached snapshot cloning. I want to understand how to mark a namespace or PVC for use with cached snapshot cloning.
Update: Scope of task (updated Aug 16)
- Update "Auto import boot source" modules. Current doc mentions only PVCs. This needs to be changed to "volume snapshots". Mention the performance benefits (from Adam's comment below) in creating VMs from VolumeSnapshot images.
- Images for known storage providers will be VolumeSnapshots. This is for the user's information. User does not need to do anything.
- Procedure module for opting in to volume snapshot images. If an unknown storage provider is used, the user has the option of specifying a snapshot format by editing the StorageProfile CR. See example in Alex's PR. We can call this new module, "Enabling volume snapshots as boot sources" or something similar.
- New module can go right after About virtual machines and boot sources. The intro should be expanded so that it describes what is in this assembly.
- Update third paragraph of About virtual machines and boot sources by changing "PVCs are created" to "volume snapshots are created".
