If we instantiate our templates with some value in the CACHE_NAMES parameter, the image doesn't start up.

Just try:

oc process -f datagrid71-basic.json CACHE_NAMES=oxente | oc create -f -

And check the pod log (attached as datagrid-app-1-tmc6p.log)
