Looking at the current implementation, it should be possible but not initially trivial to use corev1.EnvVar instead of CustomEnvVar. The main advantage of using the same presentation type is SBO benefits from the more extensive semantics for the type, in this case the concept of referring to another objects to pull the variable's value.
