This issue results from local build directories somehow getting checked into the /contrib repo, possibly because of someone's .gitignore file being overwritten or corrupt.

When opening a PR, verify that the number of files you're touching and number of commits therein are what you would expect.

Also, it's probably not a good idea to do a `git add *` in step 8 here:
