SoftIndexFileStore LogAppender optimizations

The LogAppender is the single biggest bottleneck for writes with SoftIndexFileStore as an operation must wait until it completes and all disk writes are done on a single thread. We should try to move as much work away from this thread so we can scale writes higher.
